    Hello
I’m just asking what has brought this sudden influx of tourism on, and is it all tourism or is some due to migration??

    thanks rachel

Thank you for an interesting question, Rachel.

It is not “a sudden influx of tourism”, it is a stable tendency of recent years.

WTTC – The World Tourism & Travel Council – predicts that Russia is well placed to become one of the world’s Travel & Tourism powerhouses before year 2016. Tourism industry in Russia in this decade, according to forecasts by WTTC, will be developing two times faster than that in the EU.

If we look for causes for the explosive travel, we find a suppressed demand which has been released after the break-up of the Soviet Union. After shrinking at the time of the 1998 financial crisis, we have seen a stable increase of people traveling abroad (not including CIS countries), mostly to the “sun and beach” destinations. At first the growth was 9%, since 2003 we have been observing 2-digit growth rates.

Russians enjoy vacations, and the potential of Russian tourism is comparable to that of China and India, according to the ratings of tourist destinations.

What is important to note here is that not only the Russian elite is traveling abroad, although these 5 million people are the core group crossing the border. Also middle class Muscovites take vacation at least once a year (or two-three times a year), looking for the sun and the beach. 5-10% of all Russians go abroad every two months, including Christmas and New Year Holidays.

It is well known that Russians are one of the most prodigal tourists in the world according to Global Refund and RFH Consumer Insight. For example, 97% of Russian tourists make purchases right in toll-free shops of airports.

The main growth factor behind Russian outbound tourism is the growth of the country’s per-capita income. Migration flows are more characteristic for countries from Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

Also, if interested in the topic, the global tourism tendencies are well covered in the article Future Traveller Tribes 2020. Report for the Air Travel Industry, developed by Henley Centre HeadlightVision in partnership with Amadeus in 2008.

    Hello,
Could you be so kind as to inform what percentage traveled to Eastern Africa as their destination, their average age and income p.a?
And if possible, which travel agents market Africa as a destination and which have gone web 2.0?

    Thanks and regards,
    Ernest

  4. admin Says:

    Dear Ernest,

I am afraid I don’t have this statistics as I have used the stats published by the Govt Stat Office which does not provide such detailed info in their freely available publications.

Sorry and good luck finding it!

    Hello,

I currently work for a hotel company and work in the international market in NYC. I too have noticed a large increase in russian tourism and feel it will continue to rise. I was wondering if you knew of any large travel agencies, FIT wholesalers, tour operators, etc.. that specialized in outbound travel from Russia to the United States. I currently work with companies such as tourico, gullivers, allied tpro etc.. Anyh companies that have a similar business stategy and focus would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Josh

    Dear Josh,

Although we do not have a list of companies that are of your interest, I may give you an advice.

If you are a US company, you have a right to get help from the US international agencies and embassies. Since all Russian tourists must receive visas they all come to the US Embassy either in Moscow or in Ekaterinburg. Thus they are all are very concentrated and wait in the line thus it is a good chance for you to capture their attention or to meet tour operators that work with the US as a destination.

Apart from marketing, I would suggest you contact the US Embassy in Russia and any associated agencies promoting US-Russia business relations. I am sure there are publications and contacts that will be helpful for you.

    Hope this helps,
    Ivan
